The story of my quilt is the story of every summer of my childhood. My dad would take my sister and I camping every summer, and often times, this would be the only time we got to spend with him. The time was all too short, but I vividly remember the way the fire danced as I wished the night would never end. The day, of course, was filled with laughs and stories. However, when night came, we all just sat and stared; knowing our time would soon be ending. There was something comforting about the silence. I think this is why I still remember this time to this day. Faith Ringgold was born and raised in Harlem, New York. Her given name is Faith Willi Jones and from a young age, she felt the need to express her ideas through art. She is best known for her story quilts, which include a combination of paint, fabric, and storytelling. She was greatly influenced by the fabric she worked with at home with her mother, and her first story quilt was a tribute to her mother who died in 1981. It is her hope that these quilts communicate her ideas and visions, just as in her children’s stories.

I was unaware of faiths work I watched the bbc doc on her work and saw ‘the flag is bleeding’ had such an effect on me I knew I had to have this representation of injustice. It had exactly the same impact as Guernica.

AuthorI'm Paige. I enjoy being creative whenever possible. Watching my three year old daughter learn and grow has inspired me to be a teacher. I hope to one day foster creativity in my own students and help them gain the confidence to inspire others. Archives
